Habe mir mal die Definitionen der Magic-Formate durchgelesen:
Standard
In standard, you are allowed to use cards from the last two blocks, as well as the most recent core set, such as m12. For a little while after a new core set comes out, both the newest and second newest core sets are legal, but generally there is only one core set legal in standard. Currently, the legal sets are Scards of Mirrodin, Mirrodin Beseiged, New Phyrexia, m12, Innistrad, Dark Ascension, and Avacyn Restored. Standard has no ban list, currently; you can play all the cards in the legal sets. Also, standard is one of the most popular formats. Your local game store most likely runs standard tournaments.
Modern
In modern, you can use all sets from 8th edition afterwards. Modern also has a banned list. As the ban list and sets are hard to type out, I recommend you take a look at this. Modern is a decently popular format. It would not be surprising if your store ran modern tournaments.
Legacy
In legacy, you can use cards in all sets since the beginning of the game. However, legacy does have a banned list. View it here. Legacy is probably the second most popular of the constructed formats, but modern appears to be gaining on it.
Vintage
In vintage, you can also use cards in all sets, but the banned list is different. It allows more cards, and also has a restricted list; the cards in the restricted list you can only play one of in your deck. The banned/restricted list can be found here. Vintage is a dying format; most stores do not run vintage tournaments. In order to play a competitive vintage deck, you need cards like black lotus, which cost hundreds of dollars. If you don't play a competitive vintage deck, you normally get squashed within the first few turns of the game.

Ich dachte bisher immer, dass Vintage bedeutet, dass man nur Karten mit dem "alten Design" spielt.
Ja, ich bin naiv gewesen. Haha.
